Gianluigi Donnarumma proud to join 'one of the best clubs in the world'

Gianluigi Donnarumma spent his first day in Manchester on Thursday as he took pictures in the shirt and signed his contract which will keep him the Etihad Stadium until 2030.

He officially joined Manchester City on transfer deadline day, but after going away on international duty with Italy he is now back in Manchester ahead of the derby on Sunday.

The Italian number one spent five years at Paris Saint-Germain and helped them to their first Champions League win last season. But manager Luis Enrique made it clear he was no longer the first choice keeper and with a year left on his contract he made the move to the Premier League.

His first interview

After taking pictures and signing the contract, Donnarumma sat down for his first interview to discuss his move to the blue half of Manchester.

"Playing in the Premier League with Man City is a great emotion and I’m ready for this challenge. I’ve always dreamt about playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world."

The goalkeeper went on to say that playing in this league is the 'maximum for any player' and so that adds to how proud he is to be joining hat he described as 'one of the best clubs in the world."

Donnarumma's goals at City

The former PSG keeper was asked about what he hopes to achieve after completing his dream move to the Premier League.

"I hope to give everything possible, give my all to the fans, win many trophies together. It's a historic club that deserves to be as high up as possible."

Donnarumma could make his debut for City against Manchester United but will have competition for the number one spot from James Trafford, who has started all three league games for City so far this season.

"I’m happy, competition is good for everyone. I can’t wait to meet James Trafford. and can’t wait to meet my new team-mates. We have to be a strong, united group with people who care for each other and that's the key to success."

Pep Guardiola's influence

Just like most players when they have joined City in the past 10 years, Pep Guardiola has played at least some part in them wanting to join the club.

"The fact that he [Pep Guardiola] wanted me at Man City is a reason to be proud of. It’s an indescribable emotion. Being coached by him is the best for a football player. I can’t wait to follow him and take to the pitch with him."

He went on to say that he hopes to do great things with Pep at the helm for many seasons to come. Guardiola's current contract runs out in 2027, meaning Donnarumma may only have two seasons with Pep in charge.

Life in Manchester

The new arrival spoke on his excitement to meet people in the area and the atmosphere around the ground on a match day at the Etihad.

"I want to enjoy the city, meet new people, meet my new teammates, enjoy all the training facilities, the stadium, the environment. I'm really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere of the stadium, and get on the pitch and feel the support of our fans"

The City fans will be hoping that Donnarumma can have the sort of impact on winning that he has alluded to within this interview in order to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.

That could all begin within the next few days as City host United on Sunday, Napoli on Thursday and then travel to the Emirates the following weekend to face Arsenal.
